Financial Counseling for Caregivers

Being a caregiver to a wounded, ill, or disabled warrior is a huge job and stretches the caregiver emotionally, physically, mentally, and financially. A new-ish program is designed to help provide specially designed financial counseling for caregivers of veterans.  A collaboration between USAA, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and the PyschArmor Institute, this program connects military caregivers with USAA financial advisors.  These advisors are prepared to discuss regular financial issues such as budgeting, debt management, and retirement planning as well as issues specific to the caregiver's situation.  This might include more complicated estate planning, high medical bills, and challenges maintaining a regular income due to caregiving responsibilities.

In order to access this service, caregivers will first call the MOAA hotline at 888-503-1168 between 12:00 noon and 6:00 pm, Eastern time, on regular business days.  The MOAA representative will collect some basic information for tracking and determine if the case is appropriate to be transferred to a USAA financial advisor.

The USAA financial advisor will learn about your situation, both personally and with regard to your finances, provide advice that is appropriate to your situation, and make recommendations for actions that you can take.

This service is entirely free to caregivers of all veterans of all ranks and all branches of service.

Caregiving is a hard job under any circumstances, and it often creates extra financial challenges.  Let the pros at USAA help you to identify and solve your biggest issues so that you can focus on taking care of your veteran.

This program is part of the many resources offered through the Tips for Lifelong Caregiving guide created by MOAA and the Elizabeth Dole Foundation.  If you are a caregiver, I encourage you to find a few moments to look through the website.  There is a treasure of legal and financial information available to help you through your journey.
