2015 BAH Rates Available

Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rates for 2015 have been posted, and you can look up the new rate for your area at the BAH Charts located here at Military.com.

2015 BAH RATES (1)Rates across the country have risen an average of 0.5%, which is actually surprising considering the changes in the way that the rates are calculated and the falling housing prices in much of the country.  Areas with large losses in BAH include the Fort Huachuca, Arizona, with a loss of about 11%, and Ogden, Utah, with a fall of around 8%.  Rates are climbing in San Diego, California, with an 8% average increase, and Travis Air Force Base, California with a 7% average increase. Areas just outside of Washington, DC, such as Quantico, Virginia and Fort Meade, Maryland, have big decreases as well.

To understand the full process of how BAH is calculated, read The BAH Formula.

My friend Rob from The Military Financial Planner made himself a little spreadsheet, and by his calculations, 190 locations had an average increase, and 155 locations had an average decrease.  He (and I) say average because rates go up and down across the ranks.  Rob said that his general sense is that a lot of lower ranks had their BAH increase while more higher ranks will see their BAH go down.

Don’t forget that BAH rate protection means that most people will never have their BAH decrease during a tour in the same area.

They can also charge federal employees and other non active duty personnel who live in housing whatever they choose. They say its comparable to other renters in the area, but I really douobt it.

I’m an O3E Stationed at Cherry Point, Nc (28562). On the DFCS page I’m showing over a $200 loss. Am I going to see this cut or will I get grandfathered in, and what order talks about being grandfathered into the higher rate?

    Thank You.

BAH rate protection rules (link in article above) prevent most members from seeing a loss in BAH. BAH rate protection is addressed in the Joint Federal Travel Regulations.

im stationed in HOUSTON, im an E5 and im loseing $80 a month, so i checked other ranks, all E5 and below losing money but E6 and above are gaining $100 + depending on rank some almost $200 raise.
Hows that fair E5 is losing pay?????????

    • Kate

Jason, no one is losing pay, first because BAH is not pay and second because of BAH rate protection rules.

BAH rates for people who PCS to the area are changing because of a change in the local rental market. Houston in particular has seen a sharp increase in costs for larger properties, while rents for smaller properties have falling slightly.

If you read about the BAH formula, and BAH rate protection, both linked in the article above, you will answer your own questions.

When will we see the increase in BAH? We are expecting a $200 increase per the BAH calculator for 2015- just curious when that will go into effect since we didn’t see it on our firsts of the month pay.

    • Bethany

The increase takes effect on 1 January so you should see an increase on the 15 January pay. It wasn’t on the 1 January pay because that is the last half of your December pay.

Will BAH protection change if someone moves residences in the same area? i.e my lease is up and I want to move to a different neighborhood (not PCSing).
