Did You Get Paid?

Many commenters are reporting that they did not get paid on 1 October 2013, or that their payments were smaller than usual.  There was a huge rash of comments early in the day, and I think that most of them were resolved as the day went on.  However, there do seem to be a few people who still haven’t been paid OR received smaller payments.

I’m trying to get an idea how many people are affected.  Could you please leave a comment if you weren’t paid, or received a smaller payment?  Please include the following information:

  • What type of payment:  military retirement, VA disability, Survivor Benefit Plan, GI Bill, etc?
  • No payment or smaller payment?
  • What bank or credit union you use?
  • What steps have you taken to figure out the problem?  i.e.  checking Retiree Account Statement, called VA, asked bank.

Please DO NOT include any personally identifying information such as name, address, telephone number, social security number, or bank account number.

MGIB Post/911, no payment, waiting till the 5th because I have received payments as late as that

  • DMoats

No retirement check–but this would be my first one, so perhaps it is just late? Hoping!

    • KateKashman

DMoats, when did you retire? There is a month delay between retirement and the first check.

  • Rick

You should have received your military retirement payment. Mine was in the bank as scheduled, along with my VA payment.

  • Burt710

Didn’t receive VA disability direct deposit to my Bank of America account on Oct. 1. Checked VA on line and called bank. Nothing. Tried to call various VA numbers, no answe at some, recorded message on most.

    • KateKashman

Oh, Burt, how frustrating. I hope you get some answers soon!

  • Frank

Paid in full on time with both Retirement and Disability pay.

    • Frank

I use NFCU if that makes a difference.

  • Gerald Liddell

I received my retirement pay, VA disability as scheduled but, I haven’t received my Vocational Rehabilitation Check as of today 3 Oct 2013.

    • KateKashman

Hmmm, Mr. Liddell. I’m afraid I don’t know anything about that subject. Hope it works out for you!

  • Allison

I retired from the US Public Health Service last Mar and have not received my check for Oct, always receive by the 1st. I use a credit union in Florida.

    • KateKashman

Hi Allison. I don’t know what pay system you use, but have you looked at your statement or called your bank? What a bother for you. I hope it is sorted quickly.

  • Frank

Heard tell that the stand off/shut down may last past 10/17. If that happens, we may not get disability checks on time.

    • KateKashman

Frank, the 10/17 problem is actually entirely different and yes, disability checks may be delayed. Things are pretty crazy right now. There is a much longer explanation here: https://paycheck-chronicles.military.com/2013/10/0… Hope that helps explain things.

Did NOT receive my separation pay for my final 2 weeks of active duty service. My official retirement date was 30 Sept 2013. Was due a full paycheck on 1 October but did not get any of it.
I bank at Navy Federal Credit Union.
Called my Navy Personnel office and they said I was one of about 20 who did not get the same type of pay and we would not be paid until a resolution is reached for the budget. Wondering of I will get my first retirement paycheck on 1 November.

    • KateKashman

I’m surprised that your Navy Personnel office told you that it was because of the budget. Final military pay is often held up to 60 days so that they can be sure to close out all accounts (loans, gear, etc.)

Unfortunately, the 1 November military pay is not completely safe yet. I hope you have some savings to tide you over.

      Thank you for your service.

I usually get two deposits. My retirement pay, then VA medical benefits pay. Military retirement pay was the only thing that dropped into my account.

The VA still has their portion dog-eared out of my military retirement pay. It’s only like 300 bucks. But, as I always said in the Marines… BOHICA!

    • KateKashman

Hmm, Rob. I am concerned. Be sure you look into this.

    1. I retire 1 February and did not receive my pay for 1-31 January to include my housing allowance which I still have to pay rent. What is the issue
2.I also have 87 days of unused leave to be paid for and would like to know the maximum days to be sold. . Please help.

    • KateKashman

Robert, are you saying that you did not receive a January mid-month paycheck? Are you usually paid twice a month, or are you on a once a month pay schedule? Last active duty mililtary paychecks can be held up to 60 days to ensure that the accounting is totally clear. Regarding the leave, I belive you can sell back up to 60 days. You would, however, be better off postponing your retirement date and using the leave as terminal leave. While on terminal leave, you continue receiving BAH and BAS, plus you even continue to accrue leave. If you sell back your leave, you do not get the equal value of BAH and BAS. I’m not sure if you can change your retirement date at this late time.
