FacebookXPinterestEmailEmailEmailShare

The annual Military Saves Week program is coming, 23 to 28 February 2015.  Every base or installation will be having some sort of activities related to this Department of Defense-sponsored awareness week.  Typical offerings include classes, games, and, sometimes, prizes!

What Is Military Saves?

Military Saves is a part of the nonprofit America Saves and a partner in the Department of Defense’s Financial Readiness Campaign.  The Military Saves program is designed to "motivate, support, and encourage military families to save money, reduce debt, and build wealth." "Military Saves encourages all servicemembers, their families, and civilian employees to take the Military Saves pledge and for organizations to promote savings year-round and during Military Saves Week."

Military Saves works with FINRA Investor Education Foundation, the defense credit unions, military banks and other non-profit organizations to promote savings and debt reduction.

What Happens During Military Saves Week?

The exact programs will be a little different at each location.  For example my location is having a lunch-time class each day, with lunch provided, and additional classes at other times during the day.  They are also having a scavenger hunt style game with prizes.  You will often see booths in popular locations, such as outside the Exchange or in the food court.

The purpose of these events is to raise awareness and education about a variety of finance-related topics.

How You Can Get Involved

Military Saves Week programs are coordinate through your base's family readiness center:  Fleet and Family Service Center, Airman and Family Readiness Center, Marine Corps Community Services, or Army Community Services.  Stop by or call and see what they're doing for Military Saves Week, and then participate.  Even better, talk it up amongst your workmates and friends.   It will take nothing but a little time, and you should find encouragement and inspiration to meet your financial goals.
