billyhurleygolfbagMilitary folks who live near Greensboro, North Carolina, or are crazy enough about golf to travel this week, can obtain free tickets to the 75th Wyndham Championship played at the Sedgefield Country Club from 11 August to 17 August 2014.  In addition, a refreshment station called the Military Outpost will be offering complimentary food and beverages to military members.

Free military tickets are sponsored by Michelob Ultra and can be ordered through this form.  The form has blocks for active duty, retirees, reserve/Guard, and veterans, so it appears that the tickets are available to all those groups.  Two tickets can be obtained for each eligible person.  Children 15 and under do not require tickets.

The complimentary tickets and Military Outpost are programs of Birdies for the Brave, a national military outreach program providing a variety of program to support military service members and their families.  Birdies for the Brave was founded by PGA TOUR player Phil Mickelson and his wife, Amy.  The PGA Tour adopted the program and it has been significantly expanded over the years.

Birdies for the Brave programs include complimentary tickets to selected tour events, hospitality at Military Outpost locations, the Callaway Warrior Club Fitting Program, and the Military Caddy Program.  Other programs are not golf-related, and include support for wounded warrior housing programs, service dog training, and baby showers.  I had never heard of the Birdies for the Brave program before today, and I am very impressed with their commitment and level of support to military families.

Similar offers are available for Piedmont area teachers and first responders.  I hear August has been lovely this year; might as well enjoy a little golf.
