Commissaries in Shutdown: Stateside Closed, Overseas Open

The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) has announced their plans in the event of a government shutdown.

Stores located in the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska, would be open on 1 October 2013 to sell off perishable items.  Then, these stores would be closed.

Stores located overseas would remain open on a regular operating schedule.  This includes 38 stores in Europe, 29 stores in the Pacific Region, and one store in Puerto Rico.

While this is certainly not good news, it is nice to have a definitive answer in advance.  This will allow people to shop before the shutdown (as long as the shelves still have supplies) and prepare alternate plans.  Some people may not find that their lives are impacted much, but families in expensive areas will certainly need to make some adjustments.
