A common question in my email box is: “how do I change the bank account into which my disability payments are direct deposited?” That’s a good question. Changing VA direct deposit account information is quick and easy.
There are three ways to change your direct deposit account information: online, via telephone and via the mail.
Before you start, you will need the new bank’s routing number, your account number, and the type of account (checking, savings, or other.)
I strongly recommend that you utilize the online VA eBenefits system. It’s your best choice for speedy service.
To set up on eBenefits account, go to www.ebenefits.va.gov. You will be signing up for a “Premium Account.” In order to get a Premium account, you will have to register for a Basic Account and then take additional steps to verify your identity.
You must currently be enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS). DEERS currently includes everyone who has served since 1982, and many of the people who served before 1982. However, if you’re not already in DEERS, you may receive a notification about this issue, and you’ll have to take some extra steps to complete the process.
It may take a little time to set up the account, but the effort will be rewarded. An eBenefit account will also give you quick and easy access to your payment history, GI bill information, and all sorts of other items.
To change your direct deposit information, fill out and send the VA Form 24-0296. You can find it here: http://www.vba.va.gov/pubs/forms/VBA-24-0296-ARE.pdf. The directions are on the form.
To change your direct deposit information by telephone, calling 1-877-838-2778. This telephone line is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday. I’ve heard that you may have to wait a while, so grab a cup of coffee and a book before you call.
I always love getting emails from readers. I can’t answer every one, but I do try. Even if I am unable to personally respond to your email, I use the information from these emails to understand what information will be most helpful to my readers.
Thank you, and happy Saturday!
