Air Force & Coast Guard Cut TA

March 12, 2013 | Kate

The Air Force and the Coast Guard have joined the Army and Marine Corps in suspending tuition assistance programs.  At this time, only the Navy has not yet suspended tuition assistance.

The Air Force announcement was made on today but it actually stopped accepting new enrollments at 1700 on Monday, 12 March 2013.  Airman may complete their currently approved courses but will not receive any new funding until the program resumes.  It is anticipated that the suspension will extend at least through the end of this fiscal year, 30 September 2013.

Tuition assistance programs cost the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps approximately $550 million each year.  The suspension of funding for the rest of the fiscal year will result in a savings of approximately $275 million.

The Coast Guard decision to suspend new enrollments for tuition assistance was communicated internally and has already taken effect.

I honestly doubt this program will come back. For some reason (and i won't say why i think that reason is) the media is being very mum on this. The reason why i don't think it will come back; just look at history..most things that were cut; hardly ever make a reapperance. I wish they would start looking at how much we pay out for welfare, but shockingly that is protected..completely.

I guess everything they(Congress& our US government) promised to the soldier is going the way of the health care that was taken in the mid 90's. I wonder when they will take or try to cut retirement pay. I think it will be harder and harder to get young people to join up. Most wanted to get a college degree and some training they could use in the civilian world.
