From The Mailbag: Changing Direct Deposit

December 09, 2012 | Kate

I get a phenomenal number of questions from servicemembers, retirees, veterans, and survivors regarding changing their bank account information for direct deposit of federal payments.  First, you need to know who administers your benefits.  For most people, it is either the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) or the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).  From there, it is an easy jump to find the place to change your direct deposit information.

A recent letter is common:

I receive a monthly disability from the VA; how to I switch the direct deposit to a different bank???????????

And my response:

Dear Mr. K,

The preferred method for changing your direct deposit is via the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) eBenefits online program.  If you are unable to navigate the system, or prefer to deal with a person, you may contact the VA by telephone at 1-800-827-1000, Monday to Friday, 8am to 9pm Eastern Time.

Hope that helps,

Kate
