Each year, the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) offers thousands of dollars in scholarships to dependent military children through its Scholarships for Military Children program.  Applications for the 2013-2014 school year opened today, Monday, 3 December 2012, and applications will close on Friday, 22 February 2013.

Applicants must be unmarried, dependent children of active duty servicemember, reservist, National Guardsman, or retiree, or the surviving child of a servicemember who died while on active duty, or the surviving child of a retiree.  The applicant must be enrolled in the Defense Enrollment and Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and must have a valid military ID card.  The scholarship is available for students in a full-time, degree seeking program.  The applicant must have a 3.0 minimum grade point average for consideration.

Each commissary will award a minimum of one, $1,500 scholarship.  If further funds are available, more scholarships may be awarded.  Award monies may be used toward tuition, books, lab fees and other related expenses.

Applications may be obtained at commissary locations or downloaded from the scholarship website.  Applications should be turned in to the appropriate commissary location no later than the close of business on Friday, 22 February 2013.  There are alternate instructions for applications from those not stationed near a commissary.  Applications ARE NOT accepted via email or online submission.

I love this scholarship because it draws from a small pool of applicants, increasing your chances of winning.  This is especially true if you are at a small installation.  Be sure to forward this information to your friends with graduating seniors or college students.
