A New Way to Check Out Neighborhoods

One of the things that I hate about moving to a new town is that it is so hard to pick out the good places to live.  Thankfully, there is a new website that can help!  It is called Military Town Advisor and it is designed to let people write about their homes, their towns, and their areas.  That way you can look up information before you move and learn about what areas might be good for your family.

There are three levels of reviews:  area, neighborhood, and schools and you can sort by a variety of factors, including base, residence type, family type, and age range.  One this has been up and running for a while, it will be such a valuable resource.

It is only a few weeks old, so there aren’t a ton of reviews up yet, but more are coming every day.  You can  help by reviewing areas where you have lived.  This site has been put together by a military spouse, so supporting this site means supporting the military family in more ways than one.

I am also a big fan of checking out prospective neighborhoods using Google Street View. There’s absolutely no input one way or another from anyone (and that’s how I like it). You just put in the address of a house you’re looking to rent or buy and look around the neighborhood…see if there are burglar bars on windows, cars on blocks, houses with overgrown yards, etc. (the stuff that real estate agents and their photos conveniently leave out). When we were getting ready to PCS to San Antonio, I was able to weed out a number of homes just by using Google Street View.

MilitaryTownAdvisor.com has google earth images with the reviews. There is a ‘google’ icon above the map that explains how to drag the ‘little man’ and place him on the map for street images. (just what mama2aiden was talking about). Also the reviews have a ‘safety’, ‘social’, ‘family friendly’, ‘location to base’, and ‘school’ rating built into the reviews. I agree this site will be a huge resource. There are 81 reviews and it’s been live for a month! Great information military.com!!
