VFW Scholarships for High Schoolers

The National Veterans of Foreign Wars (VWF) has announced their 2011-2012 Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition.  This scholarship competition consists of a theme-based essay and audio recording of the author reading their essay.  A total of $2.3 million in prizes are awarded at the Local, District, State and National level, including a top scholarship prize of $30,000!

I am so excited that I heard about this scholarship for several reasons.  First, that is a lot of money!  Second, it is open to students grades 9-12, which means that lots of younger students can participate.  Sometimes it is hard for younger students to get involved in scholarship programs because they are usually targeted towards older students, but the process is educational and will help with all those other applications in the future.  Third, it is a little different from your usual GPA and volunteer activities contest.

The essay themes are always interesting, too.  This year's theme is, "Is There Pride in Serving in the Military?"  Applicants will submit a 3-5 minute audio recording of themselves reading their essays.

The completed applications first go to your local VFW post and must be received by 1 November 2011.  Get your high schoolers thinking and writing, and maybe they'll earn a huge reward for their efforts.
