Three More Weeks…

The latest in a series of short-term federal funding bills, called continuing resolutions, easily passed the Senate vote today.  The bill was approved by the House on Tuesday and now needs President Obama’s signature to become law.   This three week spending measure will expire on 8 April 2011.

What does this mean?  It means that the federal government will continue to run until at least 8 April.  During this time, lawmakers will strive to come to some sort of agreement on the 2011 federal budget.  The government has been working without approved budget since the fiscal year began on 1 October 2010. Many lawmakers have stated that this is the last continuing resolution that they will approve, meaning that there are two choices:  a budget gets passed, or the government will shutdown.

This is of particular interest to Department of Defense folks because the Defense Appropriations bill has not been passed by the senate and is not law.  The Department of Defense is also working without approved appropriations and has been living with the same short-term spending issues as the federal government as a whole.  Not having approved appropriations is causing difficulties for the Department of Defense.  It is the reason for uncertainty about military pay if there is a government shutdown.

I encourage my readers to continue to educate themselves about the legislative and appropriations process, and of course, prepare for the worse, and hope for the best.

  • Pizzedoff!

There is ONE group of people that shouldn’t get paid a D@mn dime. CONGRESS! You can’t agree on a budget WTF good are you? Get your stupid @sses in there, get over yourselves and fix it! How dare these pompous politicians sit around and b!tch while even the possibility of not paying the military (WHILE THEY FIGHT AND DIE IN TWO WARS!) gets discussed. The Gov. is so sick, twisted and corrupted it’s enough to make me puke! NONE of you politicians should EVER be PAID anything! As little as they work it should be a volunteer job. The whole US should just sit down and refuse to work. If they want a shut down, give em a REAL shutdown!

  • In any business, paying the people who provide services to you is number one. It’s sad that in government, the most important business of all, that things like budgets are causing this much stress with people’s livelihood. Thank you for sharing the updates.

I as an Army retiree (ww2,Korea and VN Vet)do not believe any body smart enough to be in the Us Military is dumb enough to think about a strike. The stupidity of the congress does not flow down hill and I suggust you look at the UCMJ and think of the consequences before you advocate a strike. There has not been an execution by firing squad since Eddie Safreanski in WW2 but in case of a strike in our military I favor bringing it back.

Just thinking about people that are down range in Afghanistan, and those that are getting ready to go to Lybia, I doubt Congress won’t find a solution. I know it happened before( back in 1995). But those wars we are facing are way different.

  • Michael
