2010 BAH Rates Coming 12/17

According to a scrolling notice recently put up at the DOD BAH query page, “2010 BAH Rates will be available 17 December 2009.”  It is great to have a date so that I can stop checking every darn day.  I’ll let you know when the actual rates come out (before, on or after that date.)

Rates are available (as of 12/15/2009) at Military.com’s BAH Page.

It is nice to use letters, as it does help keep things short, but if you do not know what they stand for or you do not remember, then what evere you are talking about makes no sense. What the h*** is BAH stand for?

  • Rick

BAH is Basic Allowance for Housing. Its our monthly housing allowance based on the area you live. I bet they were figuring that since its on military.com the folks would probably know military acronyms.

  • Kate

You are both right – I usually try to explain acronyms when I use them, but honestly my brain hardly hears BAH as an acronym anymore because it is so prevalent.
Also, I’ve unpublished a few comments. Sorry, folks, but I’m just not comfortable with name-calling and such. Its the mom in me!

I was always single while I was in the Army, and never entitled to get BAH.
Although one time I spent eighteen months on Okinawa with a Marine base as my duty station of record; the Army gave me separate rations there.
That puzzled me…why, when there were Marine chow halls everywhere?
    So I went to one…
Well, all I can say is I hope – for the sake of all of you active duty jarheads out there – that the chow they’re serving you has improved.

what website are the 2010 BAH rates posted on as of today? According to the DOD website they are not released until Dec 17th.

  • KM

WTH is going on? I just checked and for our zip code and rank we are LOSING money in BAH in 2010! So much for a 3.4% raise, cause we are losing more in BAH than we were gaining with that stupid raise!!!!

  • Kate

KM – Don’t panic! Individual rate protection prevents the decrease of a BAH rate as long as the status of a servicemember remains unchanged. The servicemember who is already attached to his or her unit and receiving BAH will receive any published BAH increase, but no decrease. When the new BAH rates go into effect, rate protection assures that the servicemembers typical out-of-pocket costs may be less, but never more, than upon their reporting date.

Kate… im not too sure if i understood your post or not… are you saying that those who are already receiving say “$1900” and the new rate is “$1893” then we won’t actually see a decrease because there is no change in my husband’s active status??

  • Kate

Robin – that is correct. I’m writing a post about it right now!

how wrong is that ? for our area every rank got their
bah raised but only E-6 got money taken away. i think it’s very wrong and i want to know why they did it!
